Syllbi is built with a number of open-source libraries and relies on a handful of third-party services. This page credits what the app and website actually use.
Infrastructure
- Supabase — database, authentication, and file storage for both the app and syllbi.com. See the Privacy Policy for how your data is stored there.
Mobile app framework and libraries
The app is built with Expo and React Native, and the following open-source packages:
- Expo SDK and Expo Router, and Expo modules for apple authentication, build properties, clipboard, constants, crypto, the dev client, file system, haptics, image, image picker, linking, notifications, secure store, sharing, SQLite, status bar, and web browser.
- React and React Native, react-native-web, react-native-gesture-handler, react-native-reanimated, react-native-worklets, react-native-safe-area-context, react-native-screens, react-native-svg, and react-native-url-polyfill.
- @supabase/supabase-js — the Supabase client library.
- @tanstack/react-query (with the AsyncStorage persister and persist-client packages) — data fetching and caching.
- @react-native-async-storage/async-storage, @react-native-community/datetimepicker, and @react-native-community/netinfo.
- @expo/vector-icons — icon set.
- zustand — local state management.
Website (syllbi.com)
The marketing site is built with:
- Next.js and React.
- @supabase/ssr and @supabase/supabase-js — the same Supabase project the app uses.
- Tailwind CSS.
Content data sources
Guide cover art and metadata (film, TV, album, book, comic, manga, and game information) are resolved once, at authoring time, from public and commercial catalog APIs, and the resulting image URLs and identifiers are stored directly with each guide. The running app does not call these APIs itself. Sources used across the guide library include:
- Open Library and Google Books (books, essays, articles).
- The Movie Database (TMDB) (films and TV).
- The iTunes Search API and Spotify (albums, and as a film/TV fallback). Spotify's guidelines require attribution back to the specific album on Spotify; that attribution appears on the relevant guide nodes in the app.
- IGDB (games), via Twitch's developer platform. IGDB's terms require visible attribution wherever their art is displayed; that attribution appears on the relevant guide nodes in the app.
- ComicVine (comics). ComicVine's terms require visible attribution wherever their art is displayed; that attribution appears on the relevant guide nodes in the app.
- Jikan, an unofficial MyAnimeList API (manga).
- Wikipedia, as a fallback page-image source across several of the above categories.
This product uses the TMDB API but is not endorsed, certified, or otherwise approved by TMDB. Use of TMDB, ComicVine, IGDB, and Spotify data is subject to each of their respective terms — we don't claim ownership over the underlying creative works or their artwork.
